RUTH NEWMAN SHAPIRO CANCER & HEART FUND

Ruth Newman Shapiro was a vital young woman in her mid-thirties when cancer brought her life to an abrupt and tragic end. Her mother, Rose Newman, turned her personal grief into positive action by reaching out to the greater Atlantic City community and establishing the RUTH NEWMAN SHAPIRO CANCER MEMORIAL FUND (RNS) in 1961.

The original mission of RNS was to provide funding for the finest facilities and equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in our region. When the need for more sophisticated facilities for the treatment of heart disease became a medical priority, RNS expanded its mission and became the RUTH NEWMAN SHAPIRO CANCER & HEART FUND in order to serve the best interests of the region.

Through the support and generosity of members, friends, businesses and corporations, over ten million dollars has been raised to fund programs, services and equipment for hospitals in southeastern New Jersey.

In the past year, RNS grants provided funding for AtlantiCare's new, state-of-the-art RNS Mobile Mammography Van , one of only four mobile mammography vehicles in the nation with digital breast imaging capabilities and the first of three new RNS Transport Vans for cardiac patients at the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation.

Fundraising Events, Membership Dues and Honorial/Memorial Gifts support the Ruth Newman Shapiro Regional Cancer Center and The Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, the RNS Linear Accelerator Suite and the RNS Cardiac Care Center at Shore Memorial Hospital, the Cancer Care Program at Cape Regional Medical Center, the RNS Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at the Bacharach Institute and the New Jersey CEED Patient Assistance Program .

Because we care…our membership of over one thousand women and men will continue its efforts to save and preserve life.
